Neighborhood

About the neighborhood

THE AREA AROUND THE APARTMENT
The apartment is located in the old, historical part of the city and its popular Latin Quarter consisting of a series of narrow, informal and intimate streets and laneways. Despite the apartment being relatively modern , the area around it is characterized by traditional stone or rendered buildings, some dating back to Medieval times including the oldest excavated building in the city, the Red Earl Hall dating back to the 12th Century which is located just 25 metres from the townhouse and is now a major visitor attraction. The general area has a diverse mix of uses including residences, offices, shops, restaurant, pubs, hotels and cultural buildings. A notable feature of the area is the vast range and diversity of restaurants, coffees shops and pubs, most of them located on pedestrianized streets, in particular those at corner locations with outdoor seating. The apartment is close to the famous Saturday Market around St. Nicholas’s Church both with their origins back in Medieval times and today offers a diverse mix of local farm produce and artisan food, craftwork, artwork, clothes and books with an intimate, browsing and bustling atmosphere. Other notable attractions in the vicinity of the apartment is Charlie Byrne’s bookshop with its warren of rooms, housing a fantastic collection of new and second hand books, Tigh Neachtain’s, The Quays and The Front Door pubs (50 metres) - the three most popular pubs in the city and Sheridan’s cheese and wine shop on Chapel Lane. It is ideally located to access the main shopping streets of Shop Street and William Street, the focal commercial heart of the city at Eyre Square and the café culture of Dominick Street all within 200 metres. Finally the apartment is located less than a 10 minute walk from the main train station at Ceannt Station, adjacent to Eyre Square and the nearby Inter-City Bus station and Tourist office on Forster Street. It is a 15 minute walk to Galway University.
