Waikanae is a small coastal town just 50 mins drive or 1 hour train journey from Wellington, our capital city. Situated on the West coast we get lovely warm summers and mild winters. Waikanae has its own boat, golf and croquet clubs. The bigger town of Paraparaumu is nearby and also has it's own clubs. It also has a small privately owned airport and shopping mall with cinemas. Waikanae has a boutique cinema/cafe and small shopping area with cafes less than 10 mins walk from our home. Beautiful, quiet beach is only 5-10 mins drive away. Lots of lovely scenic and varied walks locally.
The bird conservation and wildlife reserve of Kapiti Island is just a 20 min boat trip from nearby Paraparaumu. There are organised guided day and overnight trips to the island.
Ski fields are a 5 hour drive North of us near Lake Taupo in the centre of the North Island. Here you'll also find the Hot Pools and Geysers and Maori Culture Shows.
A Ferry runs 4 times daily from Wellington to the South Island, a 3.5hrs trip with great scenery and views of the Sounds before reaching Picton (South Island). More skiing and great scenery to be had there.
Two hours drive takes you over the Rimutaka hills and into the Wairarapa region where there are numerous wineries, cafes and olive groves to explore.
The 2 week World of Wearable Arts show is held in Wellington around September/October. This is an annual Art and Fashion event taking Art off the wall , to adorn the body in Wildly Wonderful ways. The Modern Museum Of Te Papa which is a must see is also in the Capital..

Our lifestyle centres around our family and friends. We have, over the years, travelled to most of the North Island for holidays and intend to spend a few months exploring the South Island now that I've retired. Seeing some of Australia is also on the cards.
