Well located family house in YORK, Great Britain
Come and see why Yorkshire was chosen for the Grand Depart of the Tour de France 2014, and named by Lonely Planet as one of the top 3 destinations in the world for 2014. York is the historic centrepiece of this amazing English county. It's a beautiful city set in stunning and varied Yorkshire, with lots to see and do, as well as being linked by train directly to London, Edinburgh and many other wonderful towns. Our home is over 100 years old and full of character, but very comfortable, easy to manage and convenient. It's a 25 minute walk to the famous York Minster, but opposite a golf course and with nearer shops and a bus, every 10 minutes, that takes only 5 minutes to the centre of York. There's a small, secluded, walled garden, ideal for barbecues or sitting out. From the 4 large bedrooms there are views over fields, trees and a small lake, so you can feel relaxed and much further away from the city. We have WiFi, books, games and television for when you don't want to visit one of the 3 cinemas, 3 theatres, concert halls, many museums, pubs, clubs or restaurants. There is nearly always a festival in York, or nearby as well as country shows and events which are for locals and visitors alike. We also now have a holiday home on the North Yorkshire coast which means a 2 centre holiday could be planned for you and could give us flexibility over dates. To see photos of this google Mary Lyth Whitby. From there the famous coastal path and the North York Moors provide stunning views for walkers.

Lying half way between London and Edinburgh and with easy access to both, York is a popular and much loved English city, retaining its ancient part Roman, part medieval city walls, a tour of which is a leisurely way to see some beautiful buildings and gardens. There are several swimming pools and sports centres and during school holidays the nearby University offers children's sports courses which are great fun.
Visit ancient churches and the stunning York Minster - the largest medieval Gothic Cathedral north of the Alps. Enjoy shopping in Stonegate and The Shambles ancient pedestrian streets, or go to the nearby Designer outlet for some bargain couture. Discover York's history at the Jorvik Viking Centre, National Railway Museum (world's largest railway museum) and York Castle Museum.
York has a thriving culture and vibrant entertainment and festivals throughout the year. It has a good pub, restaurant and club scene as well as three theatres and a concert hall. Public lectures are given regularly and great events for children too.
Within 1 hour, you could drive to the beautiful heritage Yorkshire coast. or National parks of the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors and the Wolds region. There are excellent road links to other major cities and York is on the high speed East Coast train line giving fast and direct access to the 2 capital cities of Edinburgh (Scotland) and London both of which take around 2 hours.
Our nearest airports are Leeds/Bradford - 1 hour by bus or car, Manchester - 2 hours by train (direct from the airport to York station).

About Our Family
Our 2 children left home 5 years ago, since when we have been offering hospitality to students from abroad, We have hosted more than 60 students from more than 20 different countries during this time, so we feel we have a worldwide family!
We love the birds and ducks that come into our little garden.
We are now retired.
Lifestyle
We were regular house exchangers when we had our family, but when our children became older teenagers, we had a break from exchanging houses for 10 years. Now that we are semi retired, we have many hobbies, as well as enjoying hosting foreign visitors and home exchange is very much back on the agenda. We know our own area very well and can show people the hidden York and Yorkshire that the guidebooks don't reveal, and make it fun. This information would always be available to those who exchanged with us as we'd leave lots of suggestions. We try to find many and varied things for them to do, cultural visits, sports and activities, festivals, steam rallies, fetes and local shows. York is also well placed to visit the major cities in Britain and we have on occasions taken our visitors on guided day trips to football stadiums, the capital cities, the Moors and coast.
For ourselves, we enjoy walks, badminton, cricket, meeting friends, dancing, playing games and doing puzzles and quizzes, When on holiday we like to go to the places local people go to, the markets, fiestas, music events as well as seeing the most famous nearby attractions. We love short walks and generally exploring.
